Our club and the new age group matrix
Hello SA United SC Families,
As you are all likely aware, beginning next seasonal year 2026/2027 (beginning August 2026, ending July 2027), US Soccer has mandated the return to the School Year Cycle when determining age groups. As expected, all the leagues in which we participate have also decided to follow suit. After much discussion, we as a club will also have no alternative but to follow the same protocol.
While we are very aware that change is never easy, we feel that by following the mandate provided by US Soccer it provides the club, teams, and players with the best opportunity to compete, while also providing the best environment for development. As in the past, we fully support our coaches and their selection of players through tryouts and the seasonal year.
The tryout and selection process remains unchanged, meaning a player who would display a clear need to, and would benefit from, playing up an age group (e.g. a U11 playing U12) will be considered, as is always the case, each year.
An example of how the new format works as we head into tryouts later this year
This is how the current U11, 2015 birth year age group would be split for next seasonal year, beginning August 2026. If your child was born between January 1, 2015 and July 31, 2015, he or she would participate in the U12 age group next season (2026/2027, beginning August 2026). If your child was born after August 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015 he or she would participate in the U11 age group. Complete player pathways for boys and girls
We offer a complete player pathway for all competitive soccer players. At our elite levels we have the MLS NEXT Academy and Development Player League, for advanced, intermediate and beginner levels of play, we have select soccer and for a recreational approach we have our MLS Go program.
