Pre-Season Success

With league games starting next weekend for the majority of teams, we look back on pre-season and the work the teams have done to prepare for the start of the season. The coaches and the players have been working very hard during the course of pre-season and we are excited for regular league play to start!

Pre-season boot camp (August 5th – 8th) was a big success and the coaches and players had the chance to implement styles of play, work on technique and set the standard early for the new season. The camp was followed up with the weekend away at Flaming Camp Arrow for the U11-U14 Boys and Girls while some of our older teams participated in the Austin Elite Invitational.

SAU 00 Girls Black celebrate their 1st place finish in the U14 Girls Gold Bracket at the Houston Labor Day Tournament for the 2nd year running!

The 00 Boys Gold, 99 Boys IASA, 98 Boys IASA, 97 Boys IASA and 96 Boys IASA all attended the Austin Elite Invitational the weekend of August 10th and 11th. It was a good event to start preseason and the teams all played to a good standard. The players all played against good competition which aided their preparation for the next couple of weeks of training. The 98 Boys IASA finished runners up in the event with 3 wins and the 97 Boys IASA finished joint 2nd in the group stages after 2 wins and 2 losses. The 99 Boys IASA had two good results, 3-1 win over UHO Vipers and 1-0 win against FC Thunder before losing 0-1 to the Austin Texans in the semi-finals.

On Saturday August 17th, SA United Soccer Club hosted NB Ajax and AHFSH Fire for some friendly games at GVTC. It was an extremely successful day with 19 of our teams participating. Games were scheduled back to back on various fields which gave the program directors and DOC the chance to watch multiple games, evaluate players and provide feedback to our coaching staff. The level of play was good and we were encouraged to see our teams attempt to keep the ball on the floor, make good decisions and play the right way. We have placed a big emphasis on building from the back this season and keeping the ball and it was great to see the players working on this during the games. It was a great environment for player development and overall saw us win 9 games, draw 2 and lose 8.

The following weekend saw a number of our teams participate in the ACYSO Pre-Labor Day event. The event was held at the Alamo Sportsplex and we had a very good showing. The 01 Boys won the event with 4 wins, as did the 01 Boys Black, beating Hurst United 3-0 in the Championship game, a team that had beaten them earlier on in the tournament. The 99 Girls Black made it to the Championship game, however, unfortunately, they didn’t have quite enough to beat a good Space City team. Congratulations to all our teams that weekend for some excellent performances and well done to our 01 Boys, 01 Boys Black and 99 Girls Black for placing at the event! While this event was taking place, our 98 Girls Black attended the prestigious Aggie Land Friendship Cup in College Station. The team played to a very high level against some quality opposition recording one win, one tie and one defeat. The girls also had the opportunity to watch Duke vs Texas A&M on Friday which was a great experience and allows the girls to see what the next level is all about!

SAU 01 Boys celebrate their 1st place finish in the U13 Boys Gold Bracket at the ACYSO Pre Labor Day Tournament

The Labor Day weekend was the final weekend before the league season and a big one for the club! We had teams attending the local AAYSA Labor Day Tournament in San Marcos, 10 teams traveled to Houston for the Houston Labor Day Tournament while 6 of our senior teams made the trip to Dallas for the Plano Labor Day Event! There were some excellent results and most importantly performances in the Houston Labor Tournament. Most notably our 00 Girls Black coached by Sally Stewart who won the event! The girls recorded victories against Southwest Premier 2-0 and Albion Hurricanes 3-0 before a defeat to Lake Jackson 0-1. However, the girls would meet Lake Jackson again in the final and after a 0-0 draw, went onto win 3-1 on penalties! The Plano Labor Day Tournament proved to be a top class event for the 01 Boys, 98 Boys IASA, 97 Boys IASA, 99 Girls Black, 98 Girls Gold and 97 Girls Black. The tournament consisted of over 750 teams played at superb facilities all over Plano and Frisco. Our teams performed to a very high standard and competed against some excellent teams. The 97 Boys IASA drew 1-1 on Saturday against the #1 ranked team from North Texas, FC Dallas, the 98 Boys IASA picked up two ties against FC Dallas and Dallas Texans and the 98 Girls Gold narrowly lost two games both 0-1 on Saturday before an excellent performance saw them beat Hurst United 3-0 on Sunday. The 01 boys, 99 girls black and 97 girls also put in some very good performances over the course of the weekend!

SAU 01 Boys Gold took home 1st place in the U13 Boys Silver Bracket at the ACYSO Pre Labor Day Tournament

Throughout preseason the coaching staff have worked hard with the players to introduce some new styles of play as we focus our intentions on helping the players develop and play the right way. We have had some great games in friendlies as well as tournament play and are very excited to start the league season in September! We are looking forward to continuing to challenge the players and teams and create an environment where our players can continue to grow and show their love for the game! Good luck to all our teams at the start of the season! Go United!
